چکیده

The effect of quinidine on unidirectional fluxes of Na and K in isolated rabbit atria has been investigated and correlated with known effects of the drug on the electrical and mechanical properties of the heart. Quinidine caused a rapid inhibition of J\a entry, which secondarily depressed K efflux. In addition, the drug depressed membrane permeability to K and caused a marked inhibition of active transport, both of which were relatively slow in onset.

The Effects of Zinc on Contractility, Membrane Potentials, and Cation Content of Rat Atria

Zinc depresses the contractile force of electrically driven rat atria logarithmically with time. The threshold concentration is about 5 x 10(-6)M zinc and the half-time for contractile depression at 10(-4)M is about 25 minutes. Zinc also depresses spontaneous activity of atria and alters the transmembrane potential parameters in a manner similar to quinidine. Unlike quinidine, zinc causes an el...

Electrophysiological effects of disopyramide and quinidine on guinea pig atria and canine cardiac purkinje fibers. Dependence on underlying cholinergic tone.

We studied the role of the anticholinergic properties of disopyramide and quinidine in mediating the electrophysiological effects of these agents on isolated cardiac tissue. In right atria, disopyramide, quinidine, and procainamide administered alone elicited negative chronotropic responses. However, after cholinergic stimulation with physostigmine (1 X 10" M), disopyramide and quinidine produc...

Organic cation transport by Malpighian tubules of Drosophila melanogaster: application of two novel electrophysiological methods.

Transport of the prototypical organic cation tetraethylammonium (TEA) by the Malpighian tubules, ureters and gut of Drosophila melanogaster was studied using two novel electrophysiological techniques. Both techniques exploited the high selectivity of the cation exchanger potassium tetra-p-chlorophenylborate for tetraalkylammonium compounds relative to inorganic cations such as K(+). In the firs...

Effects of flecainide and quinidine on human atrial action potentials. Role of rate-dependence and comparison with guinea pig, rabbit, and dog tissues.

Flecainide and other class IC antiarrhythmic drugs are effective in the prevention and termination of atrial fibrillation, but the mechanism of this action is unknown. To gain insights into potential cellular mechanisms, we evaluated the response of human atrial action potentials to equimolar therapeutic concentrations of flecainide and quinidine and compared this response to that of guinea pig...
